United teach the Power of Sport
Leeds United Foundation has this week launched a unique community programme which will teach young people how the daily meals, exercise and movement of their favourite United players, helps light up their homes.
The ‘Power of Sport’ programme has been designed in conjunction with Utilita Energy, Britain’s leading pre-pay smart energy supplier and will be delivered in Primary and Secondary schools across Leeds and West Yorkshire.
Pupils at Middleton Primary in Leeds became the first school to learn how the speed and movement of Leeds United stars Kalvin Phillips and Ronaldo Vieira transfers to scientific energy output and the number of sprints and miles required to power their home electricity and watch their heroes on Sky Sports.
Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips said: “I’ve really enjoyed meeting the children involved with the Power of Sport programme and helping them understand how our sprints and movement in a game relate to energy in the home.
“It’s great to see pupils link their favourite sports with important and sometimes complex, science lessons. The enthusiasm and desire to learn has been inspirational and really impressive.”
Leeds United Foundation Head of Fundraising, Simon Fox, continued: “Utilita Energy are a perfect fit partner for our new science, technology and health-based project and we’ve had some real fun putting it together with them.
“We often take for granted how easy it is to switch on the TV without having a real understanding of how much electrical energy that requires use and how that translates to movement on the pitch and in the playground. ”
The new project coincides with the club’s announcement of Utilita as the Official Energy Partner of the club.
“These are really exciting times for the Leeds United Foundation and Utilita Energy – we are honoured to be involved in the ‘Power of Sport’ programme,” added Jem Maidment, Utilita Energy’s Head of Communications.
“When we spoke to the charity we wanted the partnership to have a real impact and benefit in the community and this brand new STEM-based project will hopefully do just that.
“We are also delighted to incentivise the people of Leeds even further. With every household sign up to Utilita Energy we will donate £5 to the Foundation to help expand the brilliant community work the Club carries out and impact on more streets and homes across the city.”
The Foundation are the official Charity of the famous Elland Road club and support over 25,000 people across the city every year.
