Soap Star drops in for surprise visit

Pupils from Fieldhead Carr School in Whinmoor received a special VIP visit this week from Coronation Street soap star, and Official Foundation Ambassador, Colson Smith.

Colson, who plays Craig Tinker in ITV's longest running programme, took time out with United mascot Lucas the Kop Cat to visit pupils taking part in a 'reward residential' as part of the Premier League "Primary Stars programme". The renowned Leeds United fan dropped in for a surprise appearance at Herd Farm in Eccup where pupils listened to advice on confidence, teamwork, respect, co-operation, perseverance and responsibility.

As part of World Book Day, students also read the Corrie star their favourite books and asked questions on his life growing up as an actor in West Yorkshire. The confident pupils then posed for pictures and autographs before returning back to their hard work and completing their reward challenge.

Colson said:

"I never cease to be amazed by the confidence and the ability of the children The Leeds United Foundation work with. The pupils from Fieldhead Carr have been a real joy to listen to and support on the Premier League Primary Stars programme. Having a book read to me by one young lady in particular was really humbling and as an actor it's important to me personally that we help children become as confident and articulate as they can in reading out loud. A huge well done to each and every one of them."

Alongside the residential visit staff from The Foundation have also been working with pupils and teachers at the East Leeds school via the Primary Stars programme. The Premier League inspired project supports children and schools in developing their PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) resources using an array of sport examples to promote equality and diversity whilst encouraging life skills such as teamwork and resilience.
