Foundation sessions make a difference for adults
A 34-year-old man from Leeds has turned his life around thanks to the help of the Leeds United Foundation and their specialist football programmes aimed at adults.
Tim Swallow, who was homeless and struggling to get into any sort of work before joining the Foundation’s ‘Turn Up and Play’ sessions, has now, thanks to the support of the Foundation, managed to work on getting himself in to supported living and gained skills to make him more employable.
The Leeds United Foundation referred Tim to St. George’s Crypt – an organisation that works with people to get them into liveable conditions, care for homeless people and provide a support network.
Before starting the Foundation sessions, that work to provide a space to play football, make friends and increase confidence, Tim had suffered from depression, a lack of confidences and anxiety.
Anthony Hall, Disability Sports Officer at Leeds United, said: “When Tim started with us on the sessions he was quiet, lacked confidence and self discipline but as the weeks have progressed Tim has become a team player and enjoys taking part in the sessions.
“Recently, Tim has also shown some great leadership qualities and enjoys encouraging others in the sessions to do well. These are great skills that will help him in the future.”
Anthony added: “It has been a pleasure to have Tim on the course and we are pleased he has now been able to find some supported living through attending the Foundation sessions.”
As part of the programme, Leeds United midfielder Eunan O’Kane, visited the sessions to pass on some of his football expertise, knowledge and experience. Eunan conducted a question and answer session before watching the session.
Tim said: “It was great to see Eunan come and visit us at the session. I love attending the football sessions with the Foundation and I have taken on board a lot of skills that will help me to get a job in the future.
“I can’t say thanks enough to the Foundation for everything they’ve done for me.”
