FOUNDATION HELPS TRANSFORM LIVES IN THE COMMUNITY
A project run by the Leeds United Foundation delivers a specialist initiative to help and support those who are living with dementia in Leeds and the surrounding areas.
The project, ‘Corner Flag Cafe’, is a monthly session held by the Foundation and sees people gather together to look through old programmes, footage of old Leeds United games and memorabilia to help stimulate old memories and experiences.
The Cafe has been in place since 2013, acts as a drop-in centre and meeting point to interact with others living with dementia. Participants are also offered help from support workers alongside ground tours, video presentations and guest appearances.
The Foundation provides a space for participants to reminiscence using club photos, press cuttings and other stimuli to help make lives as pleasant as possible for those living with dementia.
Working closely with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, West Yorkshire Playhouse, West Yorkshire Police and local voluntary organisations Dementia Friendly Rothwell, The Ciaran Bingham Foundation and Touchstone, the Leeds United Foundation are able to deliver tailored and high-quality sessions.
Jerry, one of the members of the Cafe, said: “I can tell you everything you want about Leeds United. I just love it and everything about it. The sessions are something to look forward to and I just love reading through old programmes with everyone else and talking about the old times.”
Wife of one of the members, Susan, said: “The group has been fantastic for my husband and he’s been attending for more than two years. It’s something he can look forward to and feel part of. It’s been really beneficial for me as well as I am able to meet people going through the same thing and we can share experiences. The Foundation staff are fantastic and really make it something for people to come to every month.”
Anthony Hall, Disability Sports Officer, added: "Members meet to discuss old times and talk about their experiences at Leeds United. Some of the members have been coming to matches for 50 years or more. It is great to be giving something back to the members especially when they need some support.”
